"Hi John, it's I.A., I was thinking about you and wanted to let you know that I've just graduated from the University of Liverpool with a first-class degree in Law. I was laughing to my dad the other day that when I met you I was in set 5 for maths and you brought me up to set 2!!"
Expert Tuition in Physics & Maths
I genuinely love teaching and helping my students grow in confidence. There’s nothing quite like seeing young people achieve the grades they need—whether it’s for a chosen career, a place at a public school, entry into university, or stepping into the profession of their dreams.
About me and my tutoring
I specialise in A-Level, GCSE, and scholarship preparation, offering personalised support to help students excel in their studies. I hold a long-standing degree in Physics and Mathematics from Sussex University, and after nine years of part-time study, I earned a second B.Sc. from the Open University, graduating with a 2:1.
My career began at Rolls-Royce Aero Engines in Derby, where I spent 31 years—retiring from a management role. Those years were full of rewarding challenges, lasting friendships, and the valuable skill of persuading even the most reluctant of listeners
I do ask my students to work hard and fully engage with my tutoring, as that’s when the real progress happens. At the last count, I’ve covered 19 different syllabuses—although I’ll admit statistics at A level is not very interesting to me so that's the only module I won't teach

Tom Brady American football player who led his teams to a record seven Super Bowl victories

"Just to keep you up to date with university and my studies as well. I’ve got all my offers from Nottingham, Sheffield and Aston. I think Nottingham will be my firm choice as they offer an MSci course which is perfect. They are asking for AAA to get in, good news is I got just that in my mock exams. The ground work is there and I’ve just got to keep it up until the end."

"John is an incredibly knowledgeable, interesting and patient tutor. He is clear and concise, giving practical examples and demonstrations from his box of tricks to help with understanding. All this coupled with a great sense of humour and unpatronizing manner make him the best tutor you could wish for."

"John is proving his weight in gold as S. and B. have both benefited from his help already.
They feel very much at ease with John as he communicates well with young people and most importantly, is able to teach difficult concepts in an understandable and interesting manner."

Celebrating Excellence
25 years of tutoring A-level, GCSE, and entrance exam successes
Did you truly give your best effort?
Were you genuinely working to your full potential?
Have you discussed your difficulties with your teacher to identify the underlying reasons?
Do you fully understand what the examiner expects? Prior to the exam, it is advisable to complete multiple past paper questions and review how marks are awarded.
Are you dedicating excessive time to technology, online gaming, or social media at the expense of study?
If a disappointing grade occurs in school or mock examinations, avoid being overly self-critical. Instead, focus on understanding the causes and developing a structured plan for improvement to enhance performance in future assessment
Exams make up a large portion (or all) of your final grades so there is a certain pressure to get them right. If you have scored a low exam grade it is time for some self-evaluation:
What to do following a low exam grade
It is important to recognise that experiencing a certain level of stress is entirely normal. This natural response activates the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism, which can in fact enhance performance during examinations. However, when feelings of anxiety become persistent and overwhelming, they can have a detrimental effect on both health and well-being.
If you are concerned about your stress levels, take note of any changes in your behaviour. Are you more irritable than usual? Have you been skipping meals or spending less time on activities you previously enjoyed? If so, you are certainly not alone, but it is essential to take steps to manage these pressures before they lead to long-term issues or the development of unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Consider the following strategies:
Communicate openly about your feelings, particularly with parents, teachers, or trusted friends.
Maintain a healthy balance between revision and relaxation.
If you begin to feel overwhelmed, engage in activities that can distract or divert your attention.
Explore and adopt effective stress-reduction techniques and activities.
Above all, remember the importance of talking—sharing your concerns and seeking support is one of the most effective ways to manage stress.
